Informational guide. Day Spa Vallarta is a directory: we do not perform these treatments and we do not sell them. We explain them so that you walk into the treatment room — or the doctor's office — knowing what to ask. Assessment and application of any medical procedure belong to a licensed professional with specific training.
Microneedling — also called percutaneous collagen induction — means making thousands of controlled micro-punctures in the skin with very fine needles. The skin reads those micro-injuries as a wound and starts its repair cascade: new collagen and elastin. It is one of the few non-surgical procedures that changes the structure of the dermis rather than just its surface.
What it actually treats
Its best results come on depressed acne scars, irregular texture, pores that have stretched over time and fine lines. It also improves overall skin quality: firmer and more even after a full series. On stretch marks and some surgical scars results are reasonable, though slower.
What it does not do: it does not lift a sagging jawline — that is laxity and needs other tools —, it does not erase movement lines — those depend on muscle, see the entry on botulinum toxin — and it does not add volume. When somebody promises you a "lift" with microneedling, they are selling you something else.
The line that matters: depth
Here is the critical point of this entry. At very shallow depths — tenths of a millimetre — microneedling is essentially a cosmetic treatment that improves product absorption. At the depths that genuinely stimulate collagen, you are breaking through the skin and causing pinpoint bleeding. That is an invasive procedure:
- It requires sterile, single-use material: a new cartridge, opened in front of you.
- It requires knowing the anatomy of the area and the contraindications.
- It must be done by medical staff, or under medical supervision, able to manage a complication.
If a treatment room offers you deep microneedling with topical anaesthetic and there is no physician involved, that is your cue to get off the table. And if the cartridge is not opened in front of you, same thing.
The at-home roller is not the same thing
Home dermarollers have thicker needles, they enter at an angle (which tears rather than punctures cleanly), they are impossible to sterilize properly and they are used on skin that was never prepared. The usual outcome is not collagen: it is irritation, infection, or spreading an acne lesion across your whole face. If you are going to use something at home, make it a topical product, not needles.
How many sessions and how it feels
The standard is three to six sessions four to six weeks apart. You do not see the result on the way out: new collagen takes weeks to organize, so the real change is assessed at three or six months. With topical anaesthetic the session is uncomfortable but tolerable. Afterwards you look sunburnt-red for a day or two, with tight, slightly rough skin for a few days more.
Contraindications and climate
It is not done over active inflammatory acne, skin infections, a herpes outbreak, recent isotretinoin treatment or clotting problems. And there is one specifically Vallarta contraindication: stay out of the sun in the days that follow. Your skin barrier is open, and strong exposure at that moment is the best way to end up with hyperpigmentation that takes months to fade. If you are here on a ten-day holiday, microneedling is not the treatment for this trip.
Before you decide
Ask who will perform it and with what credentials, what depth they will work at and why, what will be applied topically during the procedure (some serums should never be delivered transdermally) and what to do if a complication appears. For the medical detail and a comparison with other procedures, Spa Business has an article on microneedling versus Botox and fillers that clarifies which problem each one solves.
Frequently asked questions
Does microneedling leave marks?
Done well, no. Done badly — excessive depth, dragging the handpiece, unsuitable skin — it can leave lines or pigment changes. Which is exactly why who performs it matters.
Can it be done on brown skin?
Yes, and it is often better tolerated than some lasers, because it does not rely on pigment to work. There is still a risk of post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation if you go into the sun afterwards.
How long until I see results?
Texture starts to shift after the second or third session. The result worth judging is the one at three to six months after the series ends, when the new collagen has organized itself.
Can I combine it with other treatments?
Yes — it is often alternated with superficial peels or injectables, but not in the same session and not without a plan. That is decided by whoever assesses you, not by a promotional package.
Where can you get this in Puerto Vallarta?
The directory lists the bay's spas, skin studios and salons with their services, area and direct contact. Compare before booking, and always ask who will actually perform the procedure.
