Hyaluronic acid is a molecule your own body produces, and it holds water. As an injectable it comes as gels of different density and elasticity: some more fluid, to hydrate and soften; others firmer, able to provide structural support. Choosing the wrong gel for an area accounts for half the bad results you see walking down the street.
What it is used for
- Restoring lost volume: cheekbones and midface, temples, chin.
- Defining structure: jawline contour, chin projection, profile.
- Softening folds: the nasolabial fold or the tear trough (the structural "under-eye circle"), always depending on the cause.
- Lips: hydration, border definition or volume increase — which are three different goals.
A principle good practice keeps repeating: you treat the cause, not the symptom. A marked nasolabial fold is often not fixed by filling the fold, but by restoring support to the cheek that dropped. That is why a serious assessment looks at the whole face, not at the line you pointed to in the mirror.
How long it lasts
Between six and eighteen months depending on the area, the product and your metabolism. High-movement areas — lips — consume it faster; deep structural placements last longer. The body breaks it down naturally.
The question that saves faces
Hyaluronic acid has one enormous advantage over other materials: it is reversible with an enzyme called hyaluronidase. That matters aesthetically — if you do not like it, it can be undone — but above all it matters for safety.
The serious complication of a filler is vascular occlusion: the material enters or compresses an artery and blood supply is cut off. It can end in skin necrosis and, in high-risk areas such as the nose or glabella, in loss of vision. It is rare, but it is real, and managing it is an emergency measured in minutes and hours.
Which is why the question you should ask, literally, is: "do you have hyaluronidase here today, and have you managed an occlusion before?". A trained physician says yes and explains the protocol. Any other answer — "that never happens", "don't worry" — is reason enough not to let them inject you.
What should never happen
- A pre-loaded syringe, with no box or label in sight.
- Product with no identifiable brand name, or bought through informal channels.
- Injection at a home, hotel or salon without proper sanitary conditions.
- Permanent fillers made of non-absorbable materials or "biopolymers": they are the cause of severe late complications that are extremely hard to resolve. If offered, say no.
Afterwards
Swelling and some bruising for several days. The real result is judged at two weeks, once the oedema has settled and the material has integrated. Avoid extreme heat, sauna and very intense exercise for the first forty-eight hours — which, in a Vallarta August, means planning the procedure sensibly.

Frequently asked questions
Can it be removed if I don't like it?
Hyaluronic acid can, with hyaluronidase administered by a physician. That is why you should always choose reversible materials and be wary of any permanent filler.
Do fillers "lift" the skin?
That is not their job. They restore volume and support; used to try to correct significant laxity, the result is a heavy, unnatural face. Laxity needs a different approach.
Does it hurt?
Products usually include anaesthetic, and topical anaesthetic can be used as well. It is uncomfortable, especially in lips, but brief and tolerable.
What warning signs should I know?
Intense, disproportionate pain during or after injection, blanching of the skin, purple net-like mottling or any change in vision. With any of those, contact whoever injected you immediately: it is an emergency.
