Both do the same thing underneath — remove the surface layer of dead cells — but with opposite methods, and that changes who each one suits. On Vallarta menus they show up mixed together, sometimes with a trademarked name used as a generic category.
Microdermabrasion: dry sanding
A diamond-tipped handpiece (or, in older machines, a jet of microcrystals) passes over the skin while suction removes the loosened material. This is mechanical exfoliation: you are literally polishing the surface.
It works well on thick, oily skin with irregular texture and enlarged pores. It works badly on thin, sensitive skin, on rosacea or on skin with visible capillaries: friction and suction cause redness and can break vessels. Leaving red for twenty minutes is normal; leaving with marks that last means the settings were too aggressive.
Hydradermabrasion (HydraFacial and similar): wet exfoliation
Here the handpiece combines an exfoliating tip with the infusion of solutions — mild acids, hydrating serums, antioxidants — and suction that draws out the contents of the pores. The skin never dries during the procedure, so the aggression is far lower.
It is more versatile: it works on almost every skin type, sensitive included, and you walk out with visibly luminous, hydrated skin. That is why it is the pre-event facial: no peeling, no significant redness, and the effect shows the same day. Some places show you the little cup of what came out of your pores; that is effective marketing and a bit of theatre, but the procedure itself is solid.
What to actually expect
Both are surface treatments. They improve texture, radiance, how well your products absorb and mild congestion. Neither erases established wrinkles, corrects laxity or removes textured scars. The glow lasts from five days to two weeks, which is why they are framed as a monthly treatment rather than a one-off.
If your goal is changing the structure of your skin over the medium term — collagen, scarring, stubborn pores — what you need is a stimulus that reaches deeper, such as microneedling, not a better exfoliation.
Which one suits you
- Oily, thick skin with persistent blackheads: either one; microdermabrasion is more aggressive and on that skin that can be a plus.
- Sensitive, reactive, flushed skin: hydradermabrasion, on gentle settings.
- Dehydrated, dull skin: hydradermabrasion, because of the serum infusion.
- Active inflammatory acne: neither, over the lesions. See a dermatologist first.
Before you book
Ask whether the machine is the brand they advertise or an equivalent — not a problem in itself, but they should tell you —, how often they change tips and consumables, and which serums they use. In a destination with high tourist turnover, consumable hygiene is the first thing to slip. How long does a HydraFacial last?

Is it safe the day before a wedding?
It is one of the few facials that is: no peeling, and any redness settles in under an hour. Even so, if it is your first time, book it three or four days ahead in case your skin reacts differently than expected.

Can I have it if I use retinoids?
