A laser emits light at a single wavelength, chosen so that a specific target absorbs it: the melanin in a spot, the haemoglobin in a vessel, the water in tissue. Intense pulsed light (IPL) emits a range of wavelengths, partially filtered. That makes lasers more precise and IPL more versatile but less selective. They are not synonyms, even when they are sold as if they were.
What each one treats
- Flat sun spots (lentigines): respond well to both IPL and pigment-targeting lasers.
- Diffuse redness and broken capillaries: there are lasers built for vascular lesions and also IPL with the right filter.
- Melasma: a delicate case apart. Many devices make it worse. It requires medical judgement and almost always a combined plan, not a one-off session.
- Texture, scarring and wrinkles: ablative and fractional lasers, which work by creating micro-columns of controlled damage. Real downtime of several days.
The factor that decides everything: your skin type and your tan
Light that hunts pigment cannot tell the difference between the pigment in your spot and the pigment in your tanned skin. On brown skin, or on any skin recently exposed to the sun, the energy lands where it should not and the result can be a burn or a permanent mark.
Hence an inconvenient rule for a beach destination: if you have spent four days in Vallarta under midday sun, you are not a candidate for an IPL session this week. The standard recommendation is to avoid significant sun exposure for several weeks before and after. Any place offering you "laser for those spots" without asking when you last had sun is skipping the most important question.
What a serious session looks like
- An assessment with medical history: photosensitizing medication, suspicious lesions, pregnancy, history of cold sores.
- A mole check. A laser should never be fired over an undiagnosed pigmented lesion.
- A test patch before treating the whole face, especially on darker skin types.
- Protective eyewear for you and for the operator. No exceptions.
- Parameters written into your file, so the next session can be repeated or corrected.
Afterwards
Spots darken before they go: they look like little coffee-coloured crusts for several days and then flake off. Do not scrub them. Strict sunscreen, a hat, and no ocean or pool while there is any crusting. On redness you may be left with mild bruising or a net-like pattern for a few days.
Who is allowed to perform it
This is a medical procedure. A badly parameterized laser burns, scars and depigments permanently. Ask directly about the credentials of whoever will fire the device, and about the name of the machine. If it is applied by someone who "has used it for years" but cannot explain why they chose those settings for your skin, find another place. Frequently asked questions
How many sessions do I need for one spot?
It depends on the type of spot and the device. An isolated lentigo may clear in one or two sessions; diffuse sun damage usually needs a series. Melasma is not "removed": it is controlled.
Can I have laser during my beach holiday?
It is precisely the worst timing. Beforehand you need weeks without sun, and afterwards you need weeks more. If your trip is a beach trip, save the laser for when you are home.
Does IPL help acne?
Certain protocols help with redness and with the bacteria involved, but they do not replace dermatological treatment for active acne. As a stand-alone treatment it falls short.
Is crusting normal?
When treating pigmentation, yes: it is the expected response and it flakes off on its own within days. What is not normal is a blister, intense pain or a whitish area. Report that immediately.
