"Botox" is a trademark that became a generic name, like Kleenex. What is actually injected is botulinum toxin type A, a drug that temporarily blocks the signal between nerve and muscle. No signal, no contraction; no contraction, and the skin above stops folding. That is all it does: it does not fill, it does not tighten skin and it adds no volume.
Which wrinkles it treats
Dynamic wrinkles: the ones that appear when you make expressions. Frown lines, horizontal forehead lines and crow's feet are the three classic indications. It is also used in the masseter muscle for patients who clench their jaw, in excessive sweating of the armpits and hands, and in the neck.
Static wrinkles — the ones visible when your face is completely relaxed — do not go away with toxin. There the skin has already lost structure and the crease is etched in. An honest doctor tells you this at the first consultation instead of injecting you and waiting for the disappointment.
How long it lasts and how it feels
The effect starts between day three and day seven, settles at around two weeks and lasts, on average, three to four months. It varies with dose, metabolism and how strong your muscles are. The injections are very fine and brief; no anaesthetic is needed and you can carry on with your day, avoiding intense exercise, extreme heat and massaging the area for the first few hours.
The real risks
Unwanted effects almost always come from technique, not from the product: a drooping eyelid from diffusion into the levator muscle, an asymmetric brow, an odd smile if the wrong muscle is touched, a frozen expression from overdosing. All of them are temporary — they resolve as the effect wears off — but "temporary" here means months of uncomfortable mirrors.
There is something worse and less discussed: counterfeit or badly stored product. Toxin requires cold-chain storage and comes in identifiable vials. That is one reason a price far below market is a warning sign, not a bargain.
The non-negotiable rule
This is an injectable drug. It is administered by a licensed physician with specific training, in a space with proper sanitary conditions, after assessing you and explaining the alternatives. Not by an esthetician, not at a "Botox party", not in the back room of a salon, and not decided over WhatsApp.

If you are here for a week, bear in mind that the result will not show until after your flight home, and that if anything needs adjusting, the person who injected you will not be able to see you. Procedures that need follow-up belong where you live, not where you holiday.
Frequently asked questions
Is botulinum toxin a poison?
It is a neurotoxin used as a medicine in tiny, tightly controlled doses, with decades of medical use outside aesthetics too. The problem is never the molecule: it is the dose, the technique and where the product came from.
If I stop, will I look worse?
No. The muscle recovers its function and you return to where you were, plus whatever time has passed. What does happen is that after years of treatment many people have less etched-in wrinkling, because the muscle was less active.
At what age should I start?
There is no age: there is an indication. It is considered when a movement line starts leaving a trace at rest. Injecting it without need does not magically prevent anything, and it does cost money.
Can an esthetician inject it?
No. It is an injectable drug and administering it is a medical act. If a place offers it to you without a physician, the correct answer is to walk out.
